Transformers have internal windings that are electric “loads”.
Similar to when a HVAC or large motor turns on, causing lights to dim briefly, when transformers energize, the windings magnetizing creates a brief but disruptive load that can cause power quality concerns.
The sudden “load” creates an in-rush of current, and at the same time causes a voltage sag that distorts three-phase waveforms.
Collectively, these power quality issues can damage equipment, both inside and outside the facility.
The RVC Solutions contains both a high impedance pre-insertion transformer and integrated switching to operate automatically on facility start-up.
At facility start-up, when grid voltage is restored, the RVC switches the pre-insertion transformer into the MV circuit so all current flows through it, limiting the total allowable in-rush current to a fraction of normal levels.
Once the transformers are magnetized and the in-rush event has passed, the RVC switches the pre-insertion transformer out of the MV circuit so the facility is ready to export at full power.
Should the facility be isolated and grid voltage go away, the RVC switches again, ready to perform the pre-insertion sequence.
